              (1) History 

              Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) was founded in December 1949 as the PRC’s first foreign language school. In 1950, in response to China’s need for professionals in diplomacy and international trade, the school began to run English programs and was renamed Shanghai Foreign Language College affiliated to East China People’s Revolution University. Approved by the State Council in 1956, the University was officially renamed Shanghai Foreign Language Institute with the faculty reorganized to consist of English, French and German programs offering a 4-year undergraduate education. On September 12th 1963, it was listed by the central government as a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. Approved by the State Education Commission in 1994, the Institute was officially renamed Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) and listed as one of the first universities jointly supervised by the State Education Commission and the Municipality of Shanghai. In 1996, SISU passed the evaluation process of “Project 211” directed by the State Education Commission, and became one of the nation’s “100 key universities for the 21st century.”

              (2) Discipline and programs

              Shanghai International Studies University, as a foreign language university committed to providing a variety of applied programs; SISU prepares professionals qualified for roles in international affairs having expertise in more than one specialty. In recent years, SISU’s distinctive strength has been further enhanced with the number of language-related degree programs increasing (covering 27 languages) and the number of doctoral and master’s degree programs significantly growing, resulting in a more balanced educational structure. At present, the University is running 40 bachelor’s degree programs, 48 master’s degree programs, 17 doctoral programs and 2 postdoctoral stations. In addition, it has 3 national key disciplines and 2 municipal key disciplines of Shanghai, 1 national research center of humanities & social sciences. Currently, SHISU has a full-time enrolment of over 5,986 undergraduate students, 2996 graduate students, and 1,600 international students. 

              (3) Academic facilities and Scientific research 

              Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) has won an unparalleled reputation in China’s linguistic research and diplomatic studies. Drawing on our strengths in multi-language programs and multi-disciplinary resources, while responding to national and regional strategies, we operate more than 70 research institutes and centers serving as academic think tanks to provide advisory services on language policies, diplomatic strategies and global public opinion of China. These academic entities have contributed landmark research and are also dedicated to promoting the development of social sciences in China. SISU has two campuses, Hongkou Campus and Songjiang Campus, covering a total area of 74.7 hectares. The two campuses are closely interrelated but distinct with their own features. The SISU Library, one of the three core members of CALIS China Library Consortium of Foreign Studies Universities, has a total collection of around 1 million cataloged volumes (over half in foreign languages) and over 1.1 million electronic documents. SISU houses a range of state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities including world-class simultaneous interpretation systems, satellite signal-receiving devices and linguistic laboratories. A powerful digital audio-visual database containing multimedia resources in foreign studies has been set up to serve the needs of teaching and research. 

              (4) Shanghai International Studies University Achievement

              Over the past 65 years, SISU graduates have been contributing to the economic, cultural and social development of China and to the promotion of friendly exchange with people around the world. SISU has compiled and published a series of Mandarin Chinese textbooks to be used by non-Chinese speakers as a means of further promoting cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world.

              (5) Communication and international cooperation

              Shanghai International Studies University has made it a strategic priority in the development planning to go global and actively work on expanding students’ international horizons, in particular focusing on their immersion in a multicultural environment. The university has established partnerships with more than 330 universities and institutions from 56 countries and regions, and has maintained close connection with international organizations, including the United Nations and the European Union. Over the past five years, around 4,000 international students have been enrolled each year in Chinese language programs or other degree schemes and 8 Confucius Institutes have been established in Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South America.
