              Why Study at Beijing Foreign Studies University, China

              Beijing Foreign Studies University, or the BFSU, is a prestigious university in China and under the direct management of the State Ministry of Education. BFSU is located in Beijing, China.  As the first foreign language university and offering the most language programs in the country, it excels in the teaching and studying of foreign languages, foreign literature, overseas sinology, and also serves as an important base producing quality professionals with language competence and global vision. Currently more than 7,000 students are registered at the BFSU, 5,000 are full-time undergraduates, 1,000 are graduate students, and more than 1,000 are overseas students.

              (1)History 

              Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) was founded in 1941, and was the first institution in the country to specialize in foreign language studies the BFSU was then known as Yan'an College of Foreign Languages, which was reorganized based on the Department of Russian at Campus Three of China Anti-Japanese Military and Political University. It was renamed Beijing Foreign Languages Institute in 1949 when the People’s Republic of China was founded and incorporated with Beijing Russian Institute in 1959. The university is popularly known as Běiwài in Mandarin and BFSU in English. The university got its current name in 1994 with the approval of the State Ministry of Education. BFSU qualified for the first round of the competition in its efforts to enter Project 211, a university development programme launched by the Ministry of Education in 1996. 

              (2)Disciplines and programs 

              Beijing Foreign Studies University is authorized to confer degrees of five categories, namely, literature, economics, law, administration, and engineering. University has 13 schools and colleges, 7 departments, and several research centers, teaching 54 languages, offering 56 undergraduate, 42 masters programs and 13 doctoral programs, cultivating professionals mastering foreign languages, specializing in different majors.

              Undergraduate Programs

              Bachelor’s degree at BFSU takes 4 years in different departments such as English and other foreign languages like African languages. Apart from offering bachelor’s degree in languages and literature the university offers: International Economy and Trade, Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, E-commerce, Information Management, Information System, Law and International Relations and Diplomacy.

              (3)Academic facilities and Scientific research 

              Beijing Foreign Studies University has 65 research institutions, including National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education, National Research Center of Overseas Sinology, and Beijing Center for Japanese Studies. Its two national bases dedicated to non-common languages produce a large amount of undergraduates majoring in East European, Asian and African languages. Its strengths mainly lie in foreign languages, linguistics, literature, overseas sinology, translation and interpretation, cross-cultural studies, and international relations.

              The library of BFSU is composed of four parts: Chinese collection, English and other languages collection, periodicals reading room, and the office area, offering English, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, and other 44 languages. It contains almost 1.01 million books, 250,000 electronic books, 1100 periodicals in Chinese and other languages, 10,000 audio-visual materials, 26,000 full-text electronic periodicals, 25 databases, and 4 self-built databases. These materials are mainly about language, literature, and culture, which make the library unique. There are 300 professors and associate professors, 200 teaching assistants working at the university during school years and the management also recruits 110 foreign experts and scholars each year.

              (4)Beijing Foreign Studies University achievement 

              BFSU is committed to promoting the Chinese language and culture abroad so as to foster better understanding of this great nation by the international community. It provides training courses on teaching Chinese as the second language. It has also played an active role in setting up Confucius Institutes around the world. To date, BFSU has established 20 Confucius Institutes, making it the largest contributor to this effort among Chinese institutions of higher learning.

              (5)Communication and international cooperation 

              International exchange and cooperation has always been a distinct feature of Beijing Foreign Studies University since its founding. It admits 1,000 international students from 60 countries.

              Overseas Students Affairs Office is in charge of international exchange and cooperation programs. 

              By 2010, the University had forged partnership with 380 colleges and academic institutions in 70 countries and regions, including Oxford, Yale, and University of California at Berkeley, on extensive cooperation in faculty and student exchanges, credit transfer, and joint certificate and special programs. According to official statistics, 70% of full-time students at the University have opportunities to attend long- or short-term overseas programs. The Center for Public Diplomacy Studies founded in 2010 and the Art Institute founded in 2011 provide solid academic supports to the University in promoting the inheritance, the sustainability, and the overseas promotion of traditional Chinese arts.
